Muscari places second at state golf tournament

From staff, wire reports
For The Register-Herald

WHEELING — Wyoming East’s Evan Muscari made a mad dash from the brink only to come a lipped-out putt from a playoff at the state golf tournament at Oglebay Park’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Course Wednesday.

In finishing second, Muscari was named to the Class AA all-state team, along with Shady Spring’s Adam Perry, who finished fifth.

“No,” Muscari said when asked if he was satisfied with the result, considering he was six shots back of eventual champion Harry Howell of Scott entering Wednesday’s final round. “Is it an accomplishment? Yes. But am I satisfied? No.”

The final round was played on a rainy, windy, cold afternoon.

Muscari made a valiant run after starting on the backside with a 43.

“I was in the group behind (Howell), but play was slow so we talked on the tee box on several holes,” Muscari said. “He had a 43 on the backside, too. I parred three, four, five and six, but I was still four back after seven.

“He went bogey, triple (bogey) and I went par, bogey, so I finished one back. I had a five-footer for par (on nine) which would have sent it to a playoff, but it lipped out. That was my luck this week. I couldn’t catch a break at all.”

Muscari, who had an 83 Tuesday, had an 82 in the final round. Howell, who won it, finished the slick-greened course with an 87 after a 77 Tuesday gave him a six-shot lead going into the final round.

“I guess I didn’t come up here with my ‘A’ game,” Muscari said. “After playing as well as I did this year, it is disappointing not to win it. But that happens. I didn’t make a putt outside of five feet all week. My short game wasn’t there. I just have to come back next year and play better.”

Shady’s Perry had an 85 Wednesday and finished with a two-day total of 169.

PikeView’s Bo Garrett finished ninth (83-92—175) and Oak Hill’s No. 2 seed Rob Stevens finished in a two-way tie for 10th (88-89—177).

Princeton’s Chandler Beavers finished in a three-way tie for fourth in Class AAA after leading the tournament the first day. He had a two-day total of 159.

“It’s not easy. You’ve got the lead and you’re going to feel some pressure,” Princeton coach Pat Haye said. “It’s not always easy to finish in first place, especially against good competition. Chandler said the kid that he played with (Marshall Hone of Wheeling Park) putted better than he did, and he was playing on his home course.

“It is still quite an honor for a high school player to lead the state tournament.”

Hurricane defended its Class AAA team title. Greenbrier East was fourth. T.J. Knight had the Spartans’ top score, his two-day 167 earning him a tie for 15th in the Class AAA field.

Hone, playing on his home course, shot an 81, defeating defending champion Aaron Barna of Hurricane in a one-hole playoff to earn medalist honors with a 156. Barna had defeated Hone 3 and 2 in the finals of the state Junior Match Play Championship in June at Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington. Hurricane’s Brian Anania finished third with a 157.

No area players finished in the Top 10 in Class A. Aaron Totten of Pocahontas shot a two-day total of 181 and finished tied for 15th.

On three players in the entire tournament field finished with a score in the 70s in Wednesday’s final round.
