Cougars vent on Knights
By Dan Stillwell

Losing to WVU Tech last Wednesday left a bad taste in Mountain State University’s mouth.
Not to mention four stitches in sweeper Chaz Turner’s head.
The Cougars took out their frustrations on Virginia Southern University Monday night, holding the Knights to just one shot on goal while taking a 3-1 victory.
“After we got our butts beat our on our home field, we definitely wanted to prove something,” Turner said.
Except for one play, the Woodrow Wilson freshman played a superb match despite having suffered a concussion in the Tech game, a 5-1 loss for MSU.
“I had gone after the ball and their striker hit me in the head and I blacked out two seconds,” Turner recalled. “I was sick the week before and I thought I had (mucus) in my hands when I came to, but there was blood all over me.”
Trainer Scott Brooks had Turner to wear headgear to protect the cut and put prewrap around his jaw as if he had a toothache.
“I felt fine except for with two minutes to go. I did a header. I wasn’t thinking,” Turner said. “I thought I’d busted it open, but it was just a bead of sweat.”
Turner, who has started all season for the 5-2-1 Cougars, slipped while going after a ball in the 18th minute. The Knights went on a breakaway and Mauricio Pena was forced to bring Sevy Price down in the penalty area.
Price drilled the ensuing penalty kick past keeper Adam Thompson for the 2-8 Knights’ only score.
Otherwise, the match was all MSU.
“In the second half we came out and said it was a (cheap) goal (by VSU) and we weren’t going to give up anything else,” Turner said.”
The Cougars dominated, taking 10 shots on goal and taking numerous others that were high or wide.
“(The Tech loss) was hard for us,” striker Charlot Nacius said. “We just stepped up. We’ve practiced hard and we played as a team.”
Nacius scored twice, unassisted on a breakaway in the 10th minute and from an Ali Katrib pass in the 52nd.
Owner of seven goals on the season, the Haitian had several other opportunities to score.
“Charlot had his way tonight,” coach John Birkelbach said. “He got two goals and he should have had four. He should be scoring goals.”
Troy Beals found the back of the net in the 32nd minute from an Alex Cottle pass to give MSU a 2-1 halftime lead.
“Ali and Alex are making those through balls we want to see,” Birkelbach said. “We’re a dangerous team. We have offensive firepower and a solid defense.”
Like his team, the Tech loss is sticking in the young coach’s craw.
“Tech is not 5-1 better than us,” Birkelbach said. “We gave up two goals in 10 minutes and it was all-out attack from then on.
“We don’t play them again until next season, so we get to soak on that for a while.”
MSU hosts Pikeville (Ky.) College Wednesday for a doubleheader at Paul Cline Stadium. The women play at 5:30 p.m. while the men square off at 7:30.
