WVU goes clank in overtime

Missed field goal proves fatal to Mountaineers

By Pat Graham
AP Sports Writer

BOULDER, Colo. — Aric Goodman made a 25-yard field goal in overtime to give Colorado a 17-14 victory over No. 21 West Virginia on Thursday night.

The Mountaineers had the ball first in overtime, but Pat McAfee’s 23-yard attempt clanged off the left upright.

Cody Hawkins threw two touchdown passes — both in the first quarter — and Rodney Stewart rushed for 166 yards, the most ever by a Colorado freshman.

The Buffaloes improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2004.

West Virginia also had a shot at scoring earlier in the fourth quarter.

WVU quarterback Pat White threw a backward pass to third-string quarterback Bradley Starks, who was lined up as a receiver.

Starks had Jock Sanders all alone behind the Colorado defense but his wobbly pass fell well short of Sanders.

White ran for two touchdowns and 148 yards, and Noel Devine finished with 133 yards on the ground.

The Mountaineers (1-2) have lost consecutive road games for the first time since 2003. They lost at East Carolina, 24-3, on Sept. 6.

The Mountaineers now must prepare for its annual battle with intra-state rival Marshall, which will be played Saturday, September 27 at Milan Puskar Stadium/Mountaineer Field at 3:30 p.m.
