McClung wins club title

Jeff McClung rolled in a 4-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole Sunday to win the club championship at Grandview Country Club.

McClung, Dennis Vass and Dewayne Durham each finished regulation play at 1-over par 73 while playing from Grandview’s blue tees (6,834 yards).

After McClung clinched the victory with his birdie on the par 4 No. 1 hole, Vass and Durham, who both made par, moved on to the par 4 second hole, where Vass captured second place with a par after Durham’s second shot found the water in front of the green.

It was the first Grandview club title for McClung after a number of near misses. He came up short in playoffs three times before prevailing Sunday.

The day also featured a hole-in-one and two near aces, all on the par 3 15th. Grady Peele aced the hole and also won the closest-to-the-pin contest on No. 7. Spot Leach’s tee shot on No. 15 hit the flagstick on the fly and settled inches from the cup for an easy birdie, and Junior Varney’s tee shot also narrowly missed going in.

Other flight winners were Tim Kanagy (first), Ralph Thompson (second), Chip Booth (third) and Dick Davis (fourth). The other men’s flights played from the white tees (6,210 yards).

Tammy O’Bryan was the winner in the ladies championship flight and Glenna Honaker won the ladies first flight.

The annual Grandview sportsmanship award was presented to Chip Booth.
