GIRLS PREP SOCCER

PikeView 3, Point Pleasant 1

Kiersten White scored in the ninth minute and Danielle Carr added two more as PikeView opened its season with a win.

Rachel Weatherly, Samantha Wood and Carr each had an assist for the Panthers. Keeper Amanda Presley added seven saves.

Sarah Cochran scored a second-half goal for Point Pleasant (1-1).

PikeView plays a 4 p.m. girls match and a 6 p.m. boys match at Oak Hill Tuesday.



CROSS COUNTRY

McCoy wins Bobcat Classic boys title

Webster County’s Skyler McCoy won the boys individual title with a time of 18 minutes, 23 seconds Saturday in the season-opening Bobcat Kickoff Classic/Buckhannon-Upshur Invitational in Buckhannon.

The Highlanders’ boys squad finished fifth overall with 114 points. Philip Barbour won the event with 37 points.



Broyles-Davis lead Rainelle 4-ball Tournament

RAINELLE — Tom Broyles and Joel Davis shot a 61 Saturday to lead the opening round of the Rainelle 4-ball Tournament at Greenbrier Hills Golf Course.

Billy Lane and Jerry Hickman are second with a 62. Jerry Groves and Bernie Hamrick are atop the first flight with a 72.

Action resumes with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. today.



Men’s/high school basketball league in Shady Spring

Anyone interested in playing in a high school/men’s basketball league should call coach Ronnie Olson at 304-673-8954. The games will be played Mondays through Wednesdays beginning the second week of September at Shady Spring Middle School.



COLLEGE SOCCER

WVU women down Towson 3-0

MORGANTOWN — The 10th-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team blanked Towson 3-0 Friday night in season-opening action at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

West Virginia took a 2-0 first-half lead on goals from junior midfielder Carolyn Blank and sophomore forward Megan Mischler. Freshman Chelsey Corroto added a third goal in the 62nd minute.

WVU dominated play, taking 14 shots and holding the Tigers to one.

The Mountaineers return to action next weekend to participate in the Notre Dame Inn at St. Mary's Classic. WVU will face 12th-ranked Santa Clara on Friday, Aug. 29, and Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Aug. 31.
