KINGSPORT, Tenn. — Stefan Welch drew a walk and scored and added a two-run single, all in a six-run fourth inning, leading the Kingsport Mets to an 9-4 Appalachian League victory over the Princeton Rays on Friday night at Hunter Wright Stadium.
Princeton (14-19) attempted to rally from a 8-1 fourth inning deficit, but fell short for its second loss in a row.
The Rays will begin a three-game series tonight at Pulaski. First pitch at Calfee Park is slated for 7 p.m.
Burt Reynolds led the Rays with three hits, while Ramon Novas added two hits and scored two runs. Eli Sonoqui contributed a pair of singles.
Kingsport (21-16), which stayed within one game of first place Elizabethton in the West Division, broke open a 2-1 lead with six in the fourth off Alexander Colome (0-4) and Chris Luck.
Welch finished with two hits and three RBIs, while Dock Doyle contributed a double and a single. Michael Moras added a solo home run and a single and scored twice. Seven of the nine Kingsport starters drove in at least one run.
Raul Batis (2-1) earned the win for Kingsport, allowing three runs and six hits in five innings of work. Eric Beaulac and Jorge Rodriguez pitched the final four frames, allowing four hits, striking out six and walking none.
Princeton’s Tim Beckham, the top pick in June’s draft, was 0-for-5 and is batting .185 on the season.
