P-Rays fall to Greeneville despite solid outing from Colome

PRINCETON — The Greeneville Astros scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to slide past the Princeton Rays 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Hunnicutt Field in the opening game of a three-game set.

Early on it was the pitching of both teams that dominated the contest with both hurlers delivering pitches to the plate in the low 90s. Princeton starter Alexander Colome gave up a first-inning single, but then did not allow another hit until the fifth.

At one point Colome fanned four straight Greeneville batters. He worked 5 1/3 innings, allowed only three hits and struck out six. However, he did allow three runs and that proved to be the determining factor in the game.

Greeneville pitcher Jordan Lyles was equally strong. Lyles struck out seven Rays in five innings. Ramon Novas put the Rays on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a one-out home run over the fence in left-center — the only run Lyles and the Astros allowed on the afternoon.

Princeton reliever Angel Chapa pitched the last two scoreless innings, allowing one single but hitting two batters.

For the game Princeton managed only five hits, scattered among five different Rays’ hitters. Greeneville amassed seven hits.

The two teams meet in game two of the series at 7 p.m. today at Hunnicutt Field. Anyone presenting a church bulletin will be admitted free on “Christian Baseball Night.”
