PRINCETON — It came down to the wire, but the Burlington Royals held off the Princeton Rays 4-3 Wednesday night at Hunnicutt Field.
Burlington broke a 2-all tie in the eighth and added another run in the ninth, only to see Princeton rally to within and to have the game-tying run 90 feet away with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Princeton grabbed the lead in the fourth when Seth Henry drove a 3-2 over the fence in right field for his first professional hit.
Yowill Espinal tied the game at 1-1 on a two-out solo shot to left in the fifth.
The Rays retook the lead in the bottom of that frame when Brian Bryles tripled to center and Ty Morrison singled him home with a shot up the middle.
Burlington rallied with two outs in the sixth and tied the game on doubles by Travis Jones and Fernando Cruz to chase Oakes in favor of Jairo De La Rosa.
The Royals broke the tie in the eighth when Ryan Woods reached on an error and later scored on Jones’ third double of the night.
In the bottom of the ninth, Henry got a two-out single, but was erased on a fielder’s choice by Alejandro Torres. Torres scored on Geno Glynn’s triple to right, however, Bryles looked at strike three to end the game.
Greg Billo got the victory in relief. He worked three innings. Brett Richardson pitched the ninth for the save.
De La Rosa was handed the loss.
Princeton will try to win the series tonight when the Rays host the Royals at 7 p.m.
The first 250 fans will receive P-Rays’ key chains.
