Rain continues to alter postseason softball, baseball games

— Rain once again forced the postponement Friday of area baseball and softball postseason tournaments.
In softball, the Class AA Region 3 game between Shady Spring and Wyoming East will be played at 10 a.m. today at Wyoming East.
Attempts were made to play the game Friday at both the Shady Spring Little League complex and at Independence High School. In both cases the fields were deemed too wet to play by the officials.
The game had been halted by rain Thursday with Shady Spring ahead 4-0 in the top of the fifth inning.
A soggy field also resulted in Fayetteville’s Class A Region 3 game with Charleston Catholic getting moved to noon today at Fayetteville City Park.
The game was halted in the first inning with the score tied at 0-0.
Nicholas County’s Class AAA Region 3 final with South Charleston, halted Thursday with the visiting Black Eagles ahead 3-1 in the third inning, will be continued at 1 p.m. today in Summersville.
In baseball, four area teams have one more chance to determine their championships on the field.
In Class AAA, Woodrow Wilson and Nicholas County will meet in Summersville at 2 p.m. today for the Region 3, Section 1 title. The decisive third game has been postponed six times because of weather.
In Class A, Fayetteville and Midland Trail will decide the Region 3, Section 3 championship at Douglas Epling Field in East Bank. Play will begin at 1 p.m. with no score and Fayetteville coming to bat in the bottom of the first.
If Fayetteville loses, a second game will begin at about 3:30 p.m.
The tournament had been hosted by Midland Trail, but poor field conditions prompted the change to WVU Tech’s diamond.
West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission rules state that all sectionals must be completed today. If either game cannot be played, then the tournament will revert to single-elimination.
That would result in Fayetteville and Nicholas County winning championships. Fayetteville is undefeated in its tournament, while Nicholas won the first game of its tournament back on May 6.
