Raleigh County golfers Greg McGraw and Dennis Vass and Richwood’s Brandon Tinney lost their first-round matches Friday in the West Virginia Mid-Amateur Championship at Stonewall Resort near Weston.
McGraw, of Daniels, who was seeded 21st in the 32-man field, was defeated 7 and 6 by 12th-seeded Michael Koreski of Parkersburg. Vass, of Stanford, seeded 27th, fell 4 and 2 to No. 6 seed Steve Hussey of Wood County.
Tinney, seeded 26th, lost 1 up to No. 7 seed Mike Keiffer of Elkview.
There were two big upsets in the first round. Ian Patrick of Huntington, seeded 31st, defeated the No. 2 seed, John Duty Jr. of Morgantown, 1 up, while Tim Tedrick of Parkersburg, seeded 30th, eliminated No. 3 seed Tad Tomblin of Man, also 1 up.
Top-seeded and defending champion Pat Carter of Huntington had an easy time, beating No. 32 seed David Hawkins of Charleston 8 and 7.
Other first-round winners were No. 4 seed Travis Woodford of Glenville, No. 5 Tim Fisher of Ripley, No. 8 Hop White of Scott Depot, No. 10 Harold Payne of Hurricane, No. 11 Jim Grimmett of Davin, No. 13 Jeff Whitman of Hurricane, No. 16 Sam O’Dell of Hurricane, No. 18 Steve VanHorn of Morgantown, No. 19 John Duty Sr. of Hurricane and No. 24 Jeff Estep of Bridgeport.
The round of 16 and quarterfinals will be played today, with the semifinals and championship match set for Sunday.
