The Lady Titans need your help.
A 12-and-under all-star recreational soccer team featuring players from Greenbrier and Monroe counties, the Lady Titans are headed to Disney World June 13-15 to compete in Disney’s Six in the Sun tournament.
They’ve raised $6,000 of the $8,000 needed to make the trip, according to coach Bob Johnson.
“We need the money for tournament fees, tickets and lodging,” Johnson said. “The girls have been doing everything they can to raise the money — car washes, spaghetti dinners, bake sales and raffles.”
The Lady Titans feature 11 players who compete in 8 vs. 8 tournaments. They currently hold a 3-2-1 record and play in travel tournaments in addition to the Greenbrier Valley League.
“The girls get to play more (in 8 vs. 8). It gives them more foot time on the ball,” Johnson said. “We’ve been together eight months. It’s a good group of young ladies.”
It’s a change for Johnson, who coaches the Greenbrier East High School girls soccer team during the fall.
“The knowledge is not there as far as the game goes, so it’s more of a teaching environment, compared to teaching older players,” he said. (Disney) will be the biggest tournament for us.”
The Lady Titans are raffling off 200 lottery tickets donated by a grocery story.
They can be purchased for $5 for one ticket or three tickets for $10. The team is also selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts at $6 for a box of 12. They’ll ship May 27.
To help the Lady Titans, send donations to Lady Titans Soccer, HC 71, Box 2A, Alderson, WV, 24910. Johnson can be reached at 667-7023 or 667-2023.
