PREP BASEBALL SECTIONALS

Nicholas County 6, Woodrow Wilson 5

SUMMERSVILLE — Josh Dalton and Shawn Stewart hit run-scoring doubles in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Grizzlies in the opening game of the Class AAA Region 3, Section 1 tournament.

Stewart was 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and two RBIs for Nicholas (16-7). Pitcher Cody Smith tossed a complete game, walking two and striking out eight.

Johnny Williams and Lanny Meadows homered for Woodrow (8-19).

The double-elimination tournament continues at 6 p.m. today in Beckley.

Trail (8-9) hosts Meadow Bridge in an elimination game at 5 p.m. today.

Austin Steffey had a solo home run for Westside, which plays Liberty at 6 p.m. today in an elimination game.

Craig Cardwell had a double and an RBI for Bluefield.

The Beavers (7-12) face Iaeger today, with the winner moving on to play Mount View for the section title Thursday.

PRINCETON — Heather Crone had a triple and two RBIs and Susie Martin homered to lead Greenbrier East to a win in the first game of a doubleheader against Princeton at the Class AAA Region 3, Section 2 tournament.

Heather Walters had two hits for Princeton.

Emily McDowell went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs to help the Spartans to their second win and secure the section title.

Greenbrier East (12-22) begins regional play hosting Nicholas County at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Park, Shady Spring capture county meet

Park and Shady Spring girls were the winners at the Raleigh County Middle School Track and Field Championships Monday at Shady Spring High School.

Park’s boys scored 89 points, followed by Beckley Stratton with 64, Shady Spring with 60 and Independence with 23.

Shady’s girls came in first with 105 points. Park was second with 58, while Beckley-Stratton notched 41 and Independence scored 32.
