PREP BASEBALL

Greenbrier East 5, Oak Hill 4

FAIRLEA — Clay Ayers’ single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Cesar Martinez with the game-winning run for Greenbrier East.

Alec Austin had an inside-the-park home run and Tyler Cutlip hit a pair of doubles for the Spartans.

Brent Brash drove in two runs and Tyler Zimm was 3-for-3 for Oak Hill (17-4), which visits Wyoming East at 5:30 p.m. Monday.



Northside (Va.) 8-6, Shady Spring 3-3

ROANOKE, Va. — Tyler Lucas homered in the second game, but it wasn’t enough to keep Shady Spring from being swept by Northside (Va.).

Northside (12-4) won the opener 8-3 after holding the Tigers to three hits. Lucas, Ricky Getts and John Adkins drove in the runs for Shady.

The Tigers dropped the nightcap 6-3.

Shady (8-11-2) hosts Liberty at 6:30 p.m. Monday.



Late Friday

Oak Hill 13, Valley 0

SMITHERS — Tyler Zimm tossed a two-hitter and Rob Stephens homered and drove in four runs as Oak Hill routed Valley.

Zimm struck out 11 and walked none in six innings. Stephens struck out the side in the seventh to complete the shutout.

Brent Brash and Justin Lambert each smacked doubles.

Late Friday

James Monroe 5-8, Princeton 2-7

PRINCETON — Megan Powell ripped a pair of home runs as the Mavericks swept the Tigers.

Karsyn Boothe fired a five-hitter in the opener and had three hits in the nightcap for James Monroe (13-8), which hosts Oak Hill at 5 p.m. Monday.

Jessie Moses had three hits in the second game for Princeton.



Woodrow baseball hall inductions

Former Woodrow Wilson teammates Brandon Gravely (class of 2003) and John Sullivan (2002) will be inducted into the school’s Baseball Hall of Fame in June.

Wyoming East Basketball Camp

The Wyoming East Basketball Camp for boys and girls in grades 7-9 will be held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. June 10-13 at the high school in New Richmond.

Director Jesse Lester and coaches Gary Houck, David Chapman, Rory Chapman and Mike Sandy will conduct the camp, along with various members of current and past Wyoming East teams.

The cost is $80 for early registration and $90 the day of the camp. Hot dogs and pizza will be sold.

Only the first 40 applicants will be accepted. To register by phone, contact coach Lester at 304-294-5200 (1:15-2:45 p.m.) or at 304-922-1862 in the evenings.



MSU Basketball Camps

Mountain State University will hold the following basketball camps this summer:

June 8-12 for grades 3-5; June 15-19 for grades 1-3; June 22-26 for grades 6-7; June 29-30, July 1-3 and 18, individual sessions for grades 4-12; July 6-10 for grades 8-9; July 13-17 for grades 10-12.

All camps are for boys and girls and will run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., except the June 16-20 camp, which is from 9 a.m.-noon.

Ball Memorial Scholarship Tournament

ATHENS — Concord University will host its 21st annual Homer K. Ball Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament at the 18-hole course at Pipestem Resort State Park.

Ball was a longtime employee and supporter of Concord, a 1948 Concord graduate, former Mercer County sheriff and retired director of the physical plant at Concord.

Tee time is at 8:30 a.m., Friday, June 12. A luncheon will follow immediately in the picnic shelter below the golf course parking lot. The cost is $125 per person, which includes lunch, green fees, cart, and tournament souvenirs.

Drawings include a chance to win a week’s stay at Oak Island, N.C., and other prizes. Murphy Insurance will be providing a cash prize of $15,000 to the first hole-in-one on the eighth hole.

Awards will go to the first and second place winners of the men’s and women’s teams. Awards will also be given to the longest drive and closest-to-the-pin.

Proceeds go to the Homer K. Ball Scholarship Fund held by the Concord University Foundation. Throughout the years, the tournament has raised over $200,000 and funded around 800 scholarships. Last year alone, 76 people participated and raised a total of $15,000.
