Bluefield running back-linebacker Jake Lilly scored two touchdowns and Woodrow Wilson coach John Lilly recorded the victory as the South Cardinals took down the North Bears 21-6 Saturday in the annual North-South Football Classic at Laidley Field.
Lilly opened the scoring with a four-yard run with 4:45 left before halftime. He also returned a fumble 62 yards for a touchdown with 3:50 left in the third quarter.
George Washington’s Shaquille Williams also had a defensive touchdown, a 100-yard interception return, at the 9:59 mark of the third quarter.
Woodrow Wilson’s Adam Cook was good on all three PAT kicks.
Hunter Ferguson from Parkersburg South had the sole North touchdown, on a four-yard run in the third quartrer. The kick failed.
South quarterback Michael Brumfield completed 9 of 17 passes for 113 yards. The Cabell Midland standout was intercepted three times.
Liberty’s Jamie Newman led the South in rushing with 34 yards on five carries and caught a pass for 11 yards. Richwood’s Dustin Brown carried the ball twice for 15 yards.
Other area players included Woodrow linebacker Josh Williams, Wyoming East defensive back and long snapper Thad Grogg, Greenbrier East defensive back Nathan Lilly, Bluefield tackle John Gibson, Princeton lineman Colt Karnes, Fayetteville lineman Chase Lafferty, James Monroe lineman Cody Parker and Shady Springs defensive back-kick holder Josh Weeks.
Parker had a quarterback sack for seven yards.
The North passed for 158 yards. Quarterback Jake Hutchinson from Wirt County hit 7 of 20 passes for 84 yards while Brooke’s Cotey Wallace was 8 of 15 for 74 yards and one interception.
Wallace led the North in rushing with 50 yards on 13 carries.
Six state high school athletes received scholarships during the game. Ashley Brown from four-time defending Class AA girls basketball state champion Summers County was named the West Virginia Coaches Association’s Female Athlete of the Year.
Liberty’s Newman received a Tyler Trucking Scholarship.
Fred Ferri from Class AA Oak Hill boys basketball champion Oak Hill was one of 10 WVCA Coach of the Year winners.
Legendary Woodrow Wilson football and basketball coach Jerome Van Meter was inducted into the North-South Hall of Fame.
VanMeter was South head coach for the North-South game in 1937 and 1939. He coached at Woodrow for 30 years nad had a combined record of 222-93-14 in football and 647-232 in basketball.
He won six state championships in basketball (1946, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954 and 1957) and three in football (1947, 1948 and 1951).
