No. 3 Nitro 38, No. 11 Parkersburg 13
CHARLESTON (AP) — Quarterback Michael Scott delivered a 62-yard touchdown pass to Chris Fulmer on the first play Friday night as No. 3 Nitro beat No. 11 Parkersburg 38-13 in the second round of the Class AAA West Virginia high school football playoffs.
Scott and Fulmer teamed up for two more similar touchdown feats in the first quarter, giving Nitro (11-1) the early domination over Parkersburg (8-4). The victory sends Nitro into next weekend’s semifinals against No. 10 University, which upset No. 2 Jefferson Friday night.
Scott finished with 272 yards on 12-of-16 completions, and Fulmer totaled seven catches for 203 yards. Scott threw three TD passes and one interception. Culbertson ran for 189 yards on 20 carries.
The Nitro defense limited Parkersburg to 106 total yards in the first half and 172 for the game.
Parkersburg quarterback Kyle Sutphin had 51 yards on 6-of-19 completions with two interceptions, while Tony Morrison also had 51 yards rushing on 16 carries.
No. 10 University 27, No. 2 Jefferson 19
SHENANDOAH JUNCTION AP) — Cory Jackson ran for 156 yards and scored on 52-yard run to lead No. 10 University to a 27-19 upset win over previously unbeaten No. 2 Jefferson to advance in the state playoffs.
University (9-3) outgained Jefferson (11-1) in total offense (307-263), first downs (14-11) and forced six turnovers.
Jefferson senior quarterback Patrick Burns, who entered the game with four interceptions on the season, was picked off five times by the University secondary, including a pair by senior defensive back Cory Hess.
University quarterback Justin Hostetler completed 7-of-14 for 118 yards passing and scored on a 10-yard run with 5:46 to go in the first quarter to give the Hawks an early lead.
Burns completed 7-of-18 passes for 123 yards and one touchdown.
No. 15 Wheeling Central 21, No. 7 Parkersbug Catholic 6
PARKERSBURG (AP) — Brandon Tucker rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries Friday night as No. 15 Wheeling Central defeated No. 7 Parkersburg Catholic 21-6 in the second round of the West Virginia high school football playoffs.
Garrett Lang led Parkersburg Catholic in rushing with 53 yards on 14 carries.
Wheeling Central (8-4) held Parkersburg Catholic (8-4) to 0 yards passing, which is not a state preliminary round Class A playoff record. That honor is still held by Bishop Donahue with -10 yards in a playoff loss to Valley Wetzel in 1994.
Wheeling Central next plays the winner of Saturday’s Tygarts Valley-Buffalo game.
No. 1 Williamstown 26, No. 9 Man 12
WILLIAMSTOWN (AP) — Tyler Lowers rushed for 135 yards on 26 carries for a touchdown as No. 1 Williamstown advanced to the semifinals of the high school playoffs with a 26-12 win over No. 9 Man.
Brandon Roberts completed 4-of-7 for 84 yards for Williamstown (12-0).
Quarterback Brandon Duncan was 4-of-11 for 60 yards and one interception, while William McDonald rushed for 101 yards on 24 carries for Man (8-4).
Williamstown next week plays No. 5 St. Marys, which beat South Harrison 47-to-20 Friday night.
