Big second half sparks MSU win

By Gary Fauber
Assistant Sports Editor

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Trailing 33-28 at the break, Mountain State University shot 45.5 percent in the second half to defeat Tennessee Temple 73-58 Friday at the Trevecca Nazarene Classic.

Paul Wright, who hit a long three-pointer at the first-half buzzer, led the Cougars with 31 points. Yusef Baker followed with 18 points, and Tyrice Watkins had 10 rebounds.

MSU, ranked No. 7 in NAIA Division I, took a quick 10-2 lead. But the Crusaders went on a 25-5 run to go ahead 27-15. A pair of free throws by Renardo Dixon with 7:43 to go in the first half helped slow the Crusaders.

The game was MSU’s first since defeating WVU Tech Dec. 16.

“We got out of the gate real slow, but we were able to play good basketball in the second half,” MSU coach Bob Bolen said.

The Cougars (11-3) were certainly much improved after halftime, outscoring Tennessee Temple 45-25.

“We played tremendous basketball in the second half, offensively and defensively,” Bolen said. “We beat a good basketball team.”

Ralph Legg added 12 points for the Cougars, and point guard Jarvis Jackson had 10 assists.

The Crusaders (7-7) got 14 points each from Brad Harris and Joe Fulp.

MSU takes on Union (Ky.) at 3 p.m. today.
