Police report suicide from Gorge Bridge

FAYETTEVILLE — A woman died Monday after apparently jumping from the New River Gorge Bridge in Fayette County, according to police.

The Fayette County 911 Center received a report of an individual standing on the northbound side of the bridge at approximately 4 p.m. Monday, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department reported.

Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, the National Park Service and Fayetteville Fire Department responded to the scene. However, when emergency responders arrived, the woman had already jumped, police reported.

The woman was from Chesterfield, Va., and committed suicide by jumping from the bridge, Capt. J. Sizemore said.

No additional information is being released at this time.

An ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Sheriff’s Department.
