Man arrested after crashing into police cruiser

Beckley Police pursued and arrested a man after he crashed into a police cruiser Tuesday afternoon. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Jerry Lee Gunter.

According to Lt. J.C. McPeake of the Beckley Police Department, an officer tried to stop the vehicle on Robert C. Byrd Drive in Beckley for a simple traffic violation. Gunter refused to stop, turning onto Piney Avenue near Wendy’s and striking another vehicle, McPeak said.

After the officer pulled his cruiser behind the vehicle, Gunter then drove backwards, hitting the police cruiser and doing substantial damage, police said.

Officers were able to stop the fleeing vehicle in the vicinity of Ollie's Bargain Outlet on New River Drive where Gunter was arrested.

He faces charges of malicious assault, wounding, battery, second offense DUI, fleeing while DUI and fleeing with a vehicle with injury, according to police.
