Traffic stop uncovers marijuana stash, cash

BECKLEY — A routine traffic stop Wednesday night ended with Beckley Police finding nearly a pound of marijuana and several thousand dollars in cash at a local motel.

Police also arrested a North Carolina man who they say planned to deliver the marijuana.

According to Beckley Police Lt. Dave Farley, Cpl. Tim Capehart pulled over a Jeep Grand Cherokee when he noticed a defective taillight. When he approached the driver, he could smell marijuana.

Cpl. J.H. Blume was called to conduct a search with Ciro, a BPD drug-sniffing German shepherd.

“They do a ‘sniff’ on the car, and the dog indicates there’s the presence of narcotics in the car,” said Farley.

The driver, 30-year-old Antwone Dupree Brown, admitted to the officers that he had some marijuana in the trunk, Farley added.

Officers confiscated the marijuana and discovered that Brown was staying at a South Eisenhower Drive hotel and that Brown had a Mercury Marquise parked at the hotel.

After obtaining a search warrant, Farley said, the police conducted a search on the Mercury and on Brown’s room, uncovering more marijuana and $4,800 in cash. The total amount of marijuana was nearly a pound, estimated at $1,700 street value.

During the arrest, Farley said, Brown  was uncooperative with officers and resisted.

Brown was charged with one count each of intent to deliver and obstructing an officer.

He was transported to Southern Regional Jail and arraigned Thursday.
