Body of missing McDowell man found

IAEGER — The body of a McDowell County man who was reported missing earlier this week was found Saturday morning in his vehicle over a steep hillside off of Coon Branch Mountain outside of Iaeger.

Tony Vanover, 39, of the Iaeger area was found by a family member, according to Trooper C.A. Dunn, of the Welch Detachment of the West Virginia State Police who assisted with traffic control while McDowell County deputies worked the scene.

“He was missing on Thursday evening, but his family reported it to the Sheriff’s office after 5 p.m., on Friday evening,” Deputy A.S. Epperson of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office said.

“He was on a logging road off of Route 80 on Coon Branch Mountain when his pickup truck went over the hill.” Epperson said he was dead at the scene.

The initial report that a member of Vanover’s family had found his 1991 Ford Ranger pickup truck came into McDowell County emergency dispatch at about 9:34 a.m., Saturday and rescue and law enforcement personnel were on the scene until early afternoon.

Sgt. J.E. Muncy Jr., of the McDowell County Sheriff’s office confirmed that Vanover died as a result of an apparent motor vehicle accident.

He stated in a press release that Vanover was last seen at 10 p.m., on May 1, and added that the Sheriff’s office was notified at about 5:30 p.m., on Friday.
