UPDATE: 11-year-old in critical condition after shooting

FAIRMONT — A few more details have emerged in a shooting incident that occurred Wednesday night involving a child.

According to Fairmont Police Chief Kelley Moran, an 11-year-old boy is in critical condition at Ruby Memorial Hospital after an early-evening incident that occurred Wednesday. Moran said that another person was involved in the shooting, "but we are not releasing the identity."

At about 10 a.m. Thursday morning, Moran distributed a press release to local media about the incident. The full text of the release is as follows:

"On (Wednesday) April 9 at approximately 19:52 p.m. (7:52 p.m.), the Fairmont Police Department responded to a residence in Fairmont in reference to a shooting incident. Due to the ongoing investigation, additional details are not available at this time. The name and address of the victim are not being released at this time due to the sensitive nature of the investigation. The injured party is an 11-year-old male who was transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital.

"Further information is pending the outcome of this investigation."

Other area media reported that the shooting took place on Fairmont's West Side, but Moran did not confirm that information.

"We're not releasing the location of where the shooting occurred," the chief said.

He explained there may have been an assumption about the location of the incident because the child was sent by HealthNet from a landing zone in the parking lot of Food Lion, which is near the intersection of Locust Avenue and Country Club Road on the West Side.

According to the Marion County Central Communications 911 log, HealthNet was dispatched at 8:02 p.m., a mere 10 minutes after police responded to the residence. HealthNet landed on the ground at 8:28 p.m. and was in air by 8:57 p.m.

Moran told the Times West Virginian that the Fairmont City Police Department is the lead investigation agency handling the case.
