MOUNT HOPE —
A New Jersey man who has been a fugitive since 2008 was found in Mount Hope during a routine traffic stop Monday.
Mount Hope police officer Mark Larkin stopped Walter Delmond Johnson, 35, for speeding along Main Street Monday afternoon.
In the parking lot of Dan’s Qwick Stop, near the W.Va. 16 Bypass, Larkin approached Johnson’s vehicle and noticed the man appeared nervous and agitated. Johnson told Larkin that he did not have a license with him, that his name was Christopher Williams and his date of birth, police said.
According to police, after running a check through the Emergency Operations Center, Larkin discovered that the National Crime Information Center had information that a person with the same birth date was wanted in Orange County, N.J., for felony drug charges and resisting arrest. A physical description of Johnson then led Larkin to find out that the man he had just pulled over had not given him the correct name and was likely a fugitive.
Larkin and another officer attempted to handcuff Johnson, who attempted to resist arrest, and continued to resist officers after he was taken into custody. Police say Johnson has a history of violence against law enforcement.
Fayette County Magistrate Charles Garvin arraigned Johnson as a fugitive from justice. Johnson is currently in the Southern Regional Jail awaiting extradition to New Jersey.
