State Police arrest man for murder, having drugs

— State Police have made an arrest in the murder of a Lanark woman whose body was found Aug. 19 under a car in Harper Heights, according to a press release.

The release reported that Aaron Portis of Beckley was charged Saturday for the death of Deborah Dalton, 51. The state medical examiner had said an autopsy showed that she had been shot twice.

State Police earlier said they believed the murder was drug-related.

A search warrant was executed at Portis’ home, according to the release, which did not provide any details about how police connected the suspect to Dalton’s death.

The release did say that the search discovered cocaine and marijuana at the house and that Portis and a second man, Brandon Burdette, were charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

Both men have been remanded to Southern Regional Jail to await arraignment.
