Police investigating evening Rite Aid robbery

Beckley Police are investigating a Thursday evening robbery at Rite Aid on Johnstown Road.

A man walked into the drugstore about 8:10 p.m. and apparently started to shop, Beckley Police Department Chief Detective Lt. Dave Farley reported.

“He picked out some items like he was going to buy them and put them on the counter,” said Farley.

When the clerk asked for the money, the man didn’t have it, Farley reported.

“(The suspect) brandished a knife and told them he was just taking the items,” he said.

Farley said the items were “consumable” products, and that the man was described as short, with a brown jacket, carrying a backpack.

Following the robbery, the suspect ran up the street, said Farley.

Cpl. W.G. Pannell is investigating and obtaining surveillance video.

Farley said he will release a more detailed report of the robbery as more information becomes available.
