Woman struck, killed by train has been identified

FAYETTE COUNTY — A woman struck and killed by a CSX freight train Monday in the New River Gorge National River has been identified as Chandra Turner, 49, from Louisville, Ky.

Turner’s family members had been notified of her death, according to Robin Snyder, chief of interpretation and visitor services at the New River Gorge National River.

Turner was walking along the CSX main line downstream from Glade Creek, river right, with a blanket over her head during a heavy rainstorm when she was struck by the train.

Snyder said engineers sounded horns on the train and attempted to brake, but Turner did not react in time to avoid being struck.

Although officials were at first unclear on whether the accident occurred in Summers or Fayette county, Snyder said Thursday that Turner was killed in Fayette County.
