Rainelle man charged with sexual abuse

Police have charged a Rainelle man with sexually assaulting and abusing an 11-year-old child.

Markell James Mosley, 20, was arrested Monday evening after Rainelle Police Chief J.P. Stevens called him in for an interview at Town Hall. Mosley is charged with two counts each of first degree sexual abuse and first degree sexual assault.

According to Stevens, if Mosley is convicted, the man would face a prison term of between five and 25 years on the abuse charges and between 25 and 100 years on the assault charges, along with monetary fines ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 for each count.

Stevens said he launched an investigation after the purported victim’s parent reported two separate incidents involving Mosley late last month. The Child and Youth Advocacy Center (CYAC) helped with the inquiry.

Following the Monday evening arrest, Stevens took Mosley before Greenbrier County Magistrate Brenda J. Smith, who set bond at $60,000.

“Magistrate Smith came out last night for a hearing around 11 p.m., and it really made our (police) job a lot easier,” said Stevens, who had previously aired complaints about magistrates’ unavailability after normal office hours.

“If (Smith) hadn’t met us at her office so late, we’d have had to make extra trips back and forth, so I really appreciate she did that for us,” Stevens said.

Mosley is incarcerated in the Southern Regional Jail, pending a preliminary hearing.
