A stolen vehicle, a string of robberies and a multiple-cruiser police chase over three hours resulted in an arrest after the getaway car crashed into a daycare center Monday night in Beckley.

Around 7 p.m. Sunday, a car was stolen from the Shell Station in Daniels. According to police the car had been left unattended and running while the owner paid for gas.

Minutes later, a man matching the description of the car thief committed an armed robbery at the One Stop on Harper Road.

Again around 10 p.m. police said the same person with the stolen car robbed the Little General Store in Beaver and fled with Deputy J. Johnson in pursuit.

The sheriff’s department reported that the vehicle rammed Johnson’s patrol car and Deputies R. Utt, M. Gunther and R. Cox continued to chase the suspect to Beckley where the suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed into Rising Stars Daycare on South Kanawha Street.

Carlos Burnside, 36, of Beaver, was arrested and charged with two counts of armed robbery and grand larceny.

Police said two other people were extracted from the vehicle and transported to a local hospital with injuries. There was no information available on their status.

Burnside is currently being held in Southern Regional Jail.

The incidents are still under investigation by the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department and Beckley Police Department and more criminal charges are pending.
