Man arrested for selling fake Super Bowl tickets

A man wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service was arrested by Hinton City Police Tuesday after scamming an Iowa woman out of $3,800 by offering fake Super Bowl tickets over the Internet.

Chief Derek Snavely explained that the woman contacted Hinton Police after suspecting the Super Bowl tickets she purchased online at Craigslist from a man in Hinton, fearing she had been scammed.

The woman sent a $3,800 check to the Main Street home of Jeffrey Scott Barfield, 37, who police discovered was wanted by the U.S. Marshals for charges in North Carolina.

Snavely said Barfield escaped incarceration in North Carolina while in the process of being paroled.

Barfield confessed to placing fake pictures of Super Bowl tickets online to sell and police were able to recover the uncashed check.

Barfield is being held in Southern Regional Jail pending a U.S. Marshals Service extradition hearing.

Snavely said Barfield is connected to several local and inter-state fraud investigations and suspects other charges against Barfield may arise.
