Sex offender arrested for failing to register

West Virginia State Police Cpl. A.S. Cooper arrested a Wyoming County man Sunday for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender.

James David Harrison, 51, of 32 Prosperity Road in Campus, has a criminal record from March 2000 of sexual abuse by a parent or guardian and incest for sexually molesting a female family member who was 13 to 17 years old.

State law requires all convicted sex offenders to register their addresses within 10 business days of changing residences and to register annually.

According to Cooper, an anonymous caller reported to police that Harrison had moved from his last known address of 48 Ironwood St. in Cyclone and that he was living in Campus.

Cooper stated in a criminal complaint that sex offender registry personnel had sent a certified letter to Harrison on Feb. 3 reminding him to register within 10 business days of the letter, but Harrison had failed to do so.

State Police officers have been cracking down on sex offenders who fail to register their addresses, in an effort to protect state residents and to prevent an influx of out-of-state abusers who are attracted to the state by relaxed reporting laws, U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin had said in December.

State Police urge citizens to alert law enforcement officers to the location of unregistered offenders.
