Man allegedly beats another in face with hammer

A man is in jail after allegedly beating someone in the face with a hammer, according to a press release from the Beckley Police Department.

Casey Dale Browning, 30, was arrested Tuesday night after officers heard someone in the woods behind the victim’s house, police said.

Around 10 p.m., Beckley Police responded to Combs Street. When they arrived, they found a young man on the floor. Police said he had apparently been beaten in the face and head with a hammer.

According to the police report, several people say they saw the incident and identified the suspect.

Police say they are not sure why the fight happened, but they know the victim and suspect knew each other, the press release added.

After hearing noises in the woods behind the house, officers gave chase.

Browning has been charged with malicious wounding, fleeing from police, obstructing and battery.

He is in Southern Regional Jail on a $20,000 bond.
