Man arrested for firing into crowd

MOUNT HOPE — Mount Hope Police arrested a local man who allegedly fired a handgun into a crowd outside of Clinton Apartments Tuesday night.

Jujuan Rasheed Allen, 23, was charged with wanton endangerment.

“There were some children out,” said MHPD Lt. Mark Larkin. “We’re lucky that none of the children or anybody was struck.”

According to Larkin, Allen and another man had gotten into an argument at the spot shortly before the shooting.

The apartments are located at South Mountain Avenue and Main Street.

Eyewitnesses reported that Allen left and returned with a handgun “and just started firing shots,” said Larkin.

“He fired into an area where five or 10 people were just standing and sitting,” he said.

Two bullets struck a vehicle, and nobody was injured.

When police arrived, Allen fled the scene.

Officers were unable to apprehend him, said Larkin, but they made contact with members of Allen’s family.

Allen turned himself into authorities an hour later, he added.

Police recovered the firearm used in the shooting, and Larkin said more charges may be filed.

Allen was arrested on a charge of wanton endangerment and arraigned in Fayette County magistrate court Tuesday.

He was remanded to Southern Regional Jail in lieu of a $1,000 bond, said Larkin.

West Virginia State Police and Fayette Sheriff’s Department agents also responded to the call.
