Bomb threat pulls Liberty students from class

GLEN DANIEL — Students at Liberty High School were forced to leave their warm classrooms and trek across the road to Trap Hill Middle School Monday following the discovery of a written bomb threat inside the Liberty facility.

According to emergency dispatchers, a Liberty administrator contacted authorities at approximately 10:15 a.m. following the discovery of a written note.

Raleigh County Schools Superintendent Jim Brown said that Liberty administrators immediately followed the protocol established in the school’s crisis plan, which called for all students and faculty members to evacuate to the neighboring Trap Hill Middle School.

West Virginia State Police and Trap Hill and Coal River volunteer fire departments responded to the scene.

After a thorough search, students were able to return to their classrooms with an “all clear” just before 1 p.m., according to media reports.

This marks the second false bomb threat at Liberty in the last month, as a “virtually identical” threat was discovered in January, Brown said.

“We think it’s the same person,” Brown said.

While the perpetrator has not very been caught, Brown said that their punishment will be potential expulsion, as well as further charges from authorities.
