Former federal corrections officer pleads guilty to drug charge

FAYETTEVILLE — A former federal corrections officer who sold pills to an undercover cop pleaded guilty Tuesday in Fayette County Circuit Court to the felony charge of delivery of a controlled substance.

James Howard Butcher, 42, of Fayetteville, faces one to 15 years in prison, up to a $25,000 fine, or both, when sentenced.

Judge Paul Blake Jr. took the time to make sure Butcher was pleading guilty by his own choice since this is a felony charge. Blake also reminded Butcher that he had the right to a trial by jury, but Butcher waived that right in favor of the guilty plea.

After the hearing, Butcher was set up with a probation officer with whom he has to stay in touch with until sentencing on March 10.
