Man, 18, charged with shooting teen with pencil from crossbow

SPRINGVILLE, Va. — A Tazewell County man was facing a felony charge after allegedly firing a small crossbow at a teenage boy and striking him.

Austin Smith, 18, of Tazewell County, Va., was arrested after the incident and charged with reckless endangerment, Sheriff Brian Hieatt said Sunday.

“It happened (Saturday) around 12:30 p.m.,” Hieatt stated. “We got a call from a man taking his son to the hospital. The boy was 15 years old. Another boy had shot him in the face with a hand-held mini crossbow. Actually, what he shot him with was a pencil. I guess he put a pencil where a dart usually goes.”

The 15-year-old boy was taken to Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital, Hieatt said. The boy was not transferred from there to another facility. Hieatt did not know the extent of the boy’s injuries Saturday.

Hieatt said the incident occurred at the boy’s Springville, Va., home. Deputies investigating the case determined that a felony charge was necessary.

“This wasn’t something that was done intentionally, but done in a manner that he should have known not to do, because it was a weapon. Whether you have a pencil in it or whatever you have in it, it’s still an dangerous weapon,” he said.

Smith was being held Saturday at the Southwest Regional Jail Authority in Tazewell, Va., on a $2,500 secure bond.
