West Virginia mayor indicted on drug charges

CLARKSBURG — Federal agents arrested Bridgeport Mayor Mario Blount on Tuesday on charges of illegally dispensing prescription painkillers, U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld II said.

Blount, who is a pharmacist, was charged with conspiracy to possess and distribute schedule II controlled substances, distribution of oxycodone and failure to report the filling of a prescription, Ihlenfeld said in a news release.

Blount is accused of illegally dispensing more than 11,000 oxycodone and oxymorphone pills over a three-year period, said Karl C. Colder, an agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Blount did not immediately return a telephone message. Bridgeport City Manager A. Kim Haws also did not return a phone message.

Two co-defendants — Angela Davis, 50, of Bridgeport, and her daughter, April Davis, 23, of Marietta, Georgia, were indicted on charges of conspiring with Blount to possess and distribute oxycodone and other prescription painkillers. Angela Davis also was charged with attempting to fraudulently obtain controlled substances and with attempted distribution of oxycodone.

Telephone listings for the women could not be found. It was not immediately known whether they had a lawyer.

The charges stem from a 10-month investigation by the Greater Harrison County Drug Task Force and the DEA. The task force raided pharmacies operated by Blount’s employer, Best Care Pharmacy, in Bridgeport, Lumberport and Belington in October 2013.

“Mr. Blount abused the trust of the citizens of Bridgeport and the customers at Best Care Pharmacy. These arrests serve as a warning that the illicit distribution of controlled substances will not be tolerated in Harrison County,” Colder said in the news release.

If convicted of all charges, Blount faces up to 24 years in prison. Angela Davis and April Davis each face up to 20 years in prison.
