Uttering, forgery arrests made in Rainelle

— Rainelle police said they arrested two people Monday on charges of stealing an elderly woman’s checkbook and bankrupting her during the resulting spending spree.

According to Police Chief J.P. Stevens, both Tiffany Ramsey, 33, and her boyfriend, Clarence Miller, 29, confessed to stealing checkbooks from Ramsey’s adoptive mother, whom the pair called “Granny.”

Declining to further identify the alleged victim, Stevens said the couple shared the 74-year-old woman’s Rainelle home. The living arrangement began about eight months ago, when Ramsey was released from prison after serving six years for forgery and uttering, the same types of crimes she now stands accused of again, the chief said.

“Between the two of them (Ramsey and Miller), they’ve bankrupted her adopted mother,” Stevens said. “They took all of her money and left her without a penny in the bank.”

Stevens took the couple into custody Monday at around 4 p.m. By midnight, they were lodged in the Southern Regional Jail, each facing multiple charges connected to the alleged writing and cashing of checks taken from “Granny’s” checkbooks.

Stevens said he had charged Ramsey with 37 counts each of forgery, uttering, conspiracy to commit forgery and conspiracy to commit uttering. Miller was charged with 25 counts each of conspiracy to commit forgery and conspiracy to commit uttering.

Both were scheduled for arraignment before a Greenbrier County magistrate Tuesday. An inmate search showed both Ramsey and Miller still incarcerated in the Southern Regional Jail late Tuesday afternoon, with bail listed as $2,500 for each.
