Two charged with felony murder in overdose death

PANTHER — Two Panther residents have been charged with murder in the overdose death of a McDowell County resident.

The McDowell County Sheriff’s Department received a call about a deceased person in the Panther area of McDowell County, Sheriff Martin B. West said Thursday. Cpl. R.L. Blevins was assigned to the case along with Deputy R.L. Jones and R.R. Freeman.

Upon arrival Wednesday afternoon, Blevins found Thomas Kyle Owens, 36, of Avondale deceased at a home occupied by Brian Collins, 40, and Priscilla Faye Dotson, 33, of Panther Mohawk Road, Panther, West said.

The deputies learned that Owens was given drugs prescribed to Collins and Dotson and is believed to have overdosed due to this.

Both Collins and Dotson were charged with felony/murder and were later arraigned before Magistrate Steve Cox. No bond was set because in cases involving a murder charge, the bond must be set by a circuit court judge, West said.

A bond hearing had not been scheduled as of Thursday morning. Collins and Dotson are being detained at the county holding unit until they can be transported to the Southwest Regional Jail in Logan County.
