Mercer County woman sentenced for drug distribution

— A Mercer County woman was sentenced to a 15-month prison term Wednesday at her sentencing hearing at U.S. District Court in Charleston.

Rachelle Bryant, 24, of Bluefield, appeared before Senior U.S. District Judge David A. Faber of the Southern District of West Virginia. Bryant had pleaded guilty to distributing a quantity of hydromorphone to an individual who was cooperating with law enforcement. The crime occurred on May 6, 2013. A federal grand jury meeting in Beckley on Oct. 1, 2013, named Bryant in count one of a three-count indictment and named her and another unnamed individual in counts 2 and 3 of the same indictment.

The Southern West Virginia Drug & Violent Crime Task Force investigated the case and Assistant U.S. Attorney John File represented the government in the case. The drug transaction took place in Bluefield.Bryant had been detained since her arraignment and detention hearing on Oct. 8, 2013. Faber ordered the defendant remanded following the sentencing hearing.
