Counterfeit bills deposited in Fayette

Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler is urging area residents and business owners to take a second look at $20 bills they are handed.

Kessler said his office learned Monday that several counterfeit $20 bills were deposited at a local bank.

When deputies contacted the U.S. Secret Service office in Charleston, they discovered that additional reports of counterfeit bills had been made from the area the previous week.

No suspect had been identified Tuesday, and Kessler said officials believe the bills were uttered by someone traveling through Fayette County and not by local residents.

“These counterfeit bills appear to be of fairly good quality on first impression,” said Kessler. “When they are examined closely, however, their fraudulent nature is fairly easy to detect.”

Kessler said that instead of relying just on the detection pens that store clerks use, it’s better to hold the bills up to the light to check for the “ghost image” in the lower right-hand corner of the face side of the bill.

Kessler said anyone with information may contact his office at 304-574-4216, Crime Stoppers at 304-255-7867 or visit the Fayette Sheriff’s Department Facebook page or website, http:// fayettesheriffwv.net.
