A Beaver man who eluded police for several hours Thursday was found where authorities had been searching and is being charged with the attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, Raleigh County Sheriff Steve Tanner says.
Dylan Morgan, 21, of 119 Orchard Hill Road, allegedly escaped home confinement by removing his tracking bracelet and Raleigh County Deputy Lt. Randy Burgess pulled over Morgan in an effort to take him into custody. However, police said Morgan used his own vehicle to strike and pin Burgess between two vehicles along Skyline Drive in Beaver around 9:30 a.m. Thursday. That afternoon, when authorities caught up with him, he tried to obstruct officers and K-9 dogs were released on Morgan, police said.
Tanner said Burgess attempted to pursue Morgan, but his injuries prevented him from chasing him farther. Burgess was able to call in his injuries. He was released from an area hospital by Thursday afternoon and Tanner says his deputy is “doing fine.” Tanner credits the fact that one of vehicle’s parts gave way and prevented Burgess from further injuries.
After striking Burgess, Morgan continued to drive and then wrecked his vehicle along Orchard Hill Drive, then fled on foot, police said. K-9 dogs were used to track Burgess and tips and leads enabled officers to apprehend Morgan along Raleigh Ridge Road, near Glen Morgan, around 3 p.m. Thursday, Tanner added.
Because Morgan had been attacked by the West Virginia State Police dogs, he was taken to an area hospital for treatment before being transported to the Southern Regional Jail, Tanner said.
The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the U.S. Marshal Service, West Virginia State Police, Beckley City Police and other area law enforcement.
