— Beckley police arrested a local man Sunday on charges of trespassing and operating a clandestine methamphetamine lab on Clyde Street.

Patrolman Chris Bloxton and other officers arrived at 112 Clyde St. and entered the basement of the residence around 9:50 p.m., according to Beckley Police Department Lt. Dave Farley.

Farley said officers spotted Charles Fortner, 40, and a second, unidentified person in the basement.

“Officers could also smell a chemical odor, which they found was coming from a backpack,” said Farley.

Farley added that Fortner was identified as the owner of the backpack.

He was charged with one count each of operating or attempting to operate a clandestine lab and trespassing.

Fortner was at Southern Regional Jail Monday morning on a $25,000 bond.
