Pregnant woman dies in head-on collision near Pax

A pregnant woman was killed and another person was injured after a head-on collision Wednesday about 9 p.m. in Fayette County on Paint Creek Road in Pax, according to State Police reports.

Morgan Smith, 26, of Pax was driving a Toyota truck and crossed the center line of the road. Curtis Stover, 43, of Pax, tried to get over as far as he could in his GMC truck, but the two vehicles hit head-on, according to State Police.

Smith was killed in the crash. Stover was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center via HealthNet helicopter, but was in stable condition.

“He had what appeared to injuries to his arm, leg and internal injuries,” Sgt. C.A. Light of the Oak Hill detachment said. “I'm not going to say the injuries weren't life-threatening because you never can tell with an internal injury. He was stable at the time though.”

Light says the crash is no longer being investigated and the police aren’t entirely sure why Smith might have crossed the center-line.

Pax Fire Department and Jan-Care Ambulance also responded to the scene of the accident.
