Child struck by vehicle after getting off school bus

The West Virginia Department of Education confirmed a Nicholas County elementary student was struck by a motorist while crossing the street after getting off the school bus Friday afternoon in Summersville, according to a press release issued the same day.

The state reported the 8-year-old Summersville Elementary student suffered a broken leg and foot when a driver allegedly failed to stop for the school bus’ flashing red lights and extended stop arm.

This incident is being investigated by the Summersville Police Department, who could not be reached Saturday for comment.

These violations happen hundreds of times each school day across West Virginia, said a state official.

“We are thankful that this incident was not more tragic,” state Superintendent of Schools Jorea Marple said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family as she recovers from her injuries. The reality is a child was unnecessarily hurt.”

This incident occurred just as the state is gearing up to participate in National School Bus Safety Week, Oct. 22-26.

During the week law enforcement officers will be increasing patrols in school bus zones and during bus runs.

    Brandy Smallwood, 28, and James Green, 24, both of Fairdale, were charged Feb. 10 in connection with the death of 2-year-old Graydon Morgan.
    Green was indicted for first degree murder, death of a child by child abuse, child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, child neglect resulting in death and child neglect resulting in serious bodily injury.
    The indictment against Smallwood if for death of a child by child abuse, child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, child neglect resulting in death and child neglect resulting in serious bodily injury.
