Police: Driver crashes into department store

Beckley police say a man who had inhaled at least 13 cans of computer keyboard duster slammed into a department store Tuesday night.

Robert Daniel Hall, 23, of Cleveland School Road, Beckley, was charged with DUI (drugs) and inhaling an intoxicating compound, Cpl. R.E. Redden said. Hall was being taken to the Southern Regional Jail Tuesday night.

The accident was reported at 7:55 p.m. Earlier, Hall had been out-and-about, snorting cans of computer keyboard duster, Redden said. These products, which resemble spray cans, are intended to remove dust from keyboards with a short, powerful blast. Hall then slammed his 1998 Nissan Altima into the rear of Value City, off Robert C. Byrd Drive.

Damage to the store was light, Redden said, and there was only moderate damage done to Hall’s car. Neither Hall nor anyone else was injured.

Redden said he found 14 cans of keyboard duster in Hall’s car, and he believes at least 13 were used. Redden said Hall was “highly” intoxicated and failed a field sobriety test.

Redden noted Hall had been involved in a parking lot vehicle accident around 4:30 p.m. He was not intoxicated at the time, but Patrolman Jeremy Young seized six cans of keyboard duster from Hall. Redden noted the highs users get from keyboard duster dissipate quickly.
