Police seek two suspects

By Amelia A. Pridemore
Register-Herald Reporter

Beckley police are searching for the driver of a car who allegedly blew through a DUI checkpoint at a high rate of speed last weekend, forcing nine officers at the checkpoint to scramble for safety. A passenger in the car is also wanted.

Jonathan Maurice Moore, 28, of Pardee Lane, Stanaford, is charged with nine counts of attempt to commit a felony, one count of fleeing police in a vehicle, driving with a suspended license and reckless driving, Detective Sgt. David Allard said. Nicole Leigh Cary, 21, of Crawley, is charged with nine counts of attempt to commit a felony.

Moore is also wanted in Raleigh County for an alleged probation violation.

Allard said city officers were working a DUI checkpoint early last Sunday on South Eisenhower Drive near the intersection of South Fayette Street when he saw a gold Chevy Malibu coming north on Eisenhower. The driver did a U-turn in the middle of the road to head back toward Beaver.

Allard said he tried to stop the car at the bottom of Raleigh Hill. Allard was out of his car and coming to speak to the driver when the driver came back toward him.

The vehicle came barreling toward the checkpoint at 70 to 80 mph, forcing the nine officers to jump out of the road or take other evasive action, Allard said.

Allard said he was able to identify the driver as Moore because of previous dealings with the suspect. He was later able to identify Cary, who normally drives the vehicle.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of the two is encouraged to call the Beckley Police Department at 304-256-1720 or Crime Stoppers at 304-255-7867.
