Two are treated following ‘suspicious’ fire in Beckley

Amelia A. Pridemore
Register-Herald Reporter

A Beckley fire which authorities deemed “suspicious” sent both a firefighter and a civilian to hospitals Wednesday.

At 1:19 p.m., city firefighters were dispatched to a house at 91 Holliday Drive, situated between Pikeview Manor Apartments and Maxwell Woods townhouses, Capt. Ed Wills said.

When firefighters arrived, the house’s rear was on fire and there was heavy smoke throughout, Wills said. Firefighters attacked the blaze from the inside, having the fire out in about 15 minutes. Fire damage was limited to the back, but there was heavy smoke and water damage throughout the house.

The house was not a total loss because the overall structure remained standing, Wills said. The interior, though, was gutted.

Firefighters were unsure if anyone was inside the house when the fire broke out, Wills said. A woman found at the scene appeared to be traumatized and in emotional distress. She was taken to Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital. It was unknown if she lived at the home or knew someone who lived there.

Firefighter Justin Ragland was taken to the Beckley VA Medical Center for treatment of heat exhaustion, Wills said.

Wills said firefighters were working to determine the cause Wed-nesday, but noted they believed it was “suspicious.”

Beckley police were also involved with the investigation, with Chief Tim Deems also saying the fire appeared to be suspicious.

Police Capt. Jeff Shumate said the investigation was ongoing and that criminal charges were possible.
