Police: Copper thieves strike at East Park Pool

Beckley Police say copper thieves struck the East Park Pool — ripping out the restroom plumbing pipes.

Around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, the Beckley Police Department received a report of two men exiting the pool’s property on Broadway Street, Chief Tim Deems said. The men were seen climbing over the pool’s fence and carrying a five-gallon bucket. They stashed the bucket in a nearby abandoned house and fled.

Patrolman M.R. Gonzalez found the bucket, which contained copper piping, Deems said. The suspects had apparently pried open a door, then ripped the restroom plumbing pipes out of the ceiling. Ceiling tiles were also damaged during the theft.

The stolen pipes’ value is undetermined, but Capt. Jeff Shumate, chief of detectives, said the most expensive aspect of copper theft is often replacement costs.

“You’d be surprised,” he said. “A lot of times, that costs more than the value of the metal taken.”

Shumate said police have investigated several metal thefts in the last few weeks, and most crimes have taken place at abandoned or vacant homes. The increased price of scrap metal and the money that can be made by selling it at recycling centers has made such crime more prevalent.

The East Park Pool is closed for a fourth consecutive summer because the city does not have lifeguards to staff it.
