A Summers County man was airlifted to a hospital after receiving a gunshot wound to the leg, authorities said.
Around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, James Dewayne Shrewsbury, 38, of Jumping Branch, sustained a .22 caliber rifle wound to his lower right leg, said Lt. Larry Case of the state Division of Natural Resources’ Law Enforcement Section. He was airlifted from the scene to a hospital, believed to be in Roanoke, Va.
The incident on Ellison Ridge Road near Nimitz is being investigated as a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Case said. Exactly how it happened remains under investigation by Sgts. Mickey Sylvester and Woodrow Brogan.
Shrewsbury claimed he was hunting for coyotes, which is legal this time of year and during the time the incident happened, Case said. Authorities are investigating whether Shrewsbury was properly licensed and if anyone was with him.
