Craigsville man sentenced to prison

By Chrissy Boone
Register-Herald correspondent

SUMMERSVILLE — A Craigsville man will spend the next year in prison for his role in the attempted break-in of the Family Dollar store in Craigsville in December 2006.

Billy J. Belcher, 25, had entered a guilty plea in Nicholas County Circuit Court to attempted breaking and entering. Charges of conspiracy to commit breaking and entering and breaking and entering were dismissed as part of the plea agreement. Belcher and two juveniles attempted to enter the store and steal items, authorities said.

Defense attorney Christopher Moorehead said Belcher did not have any prior criminal convictions and would like to relocate to Wyoming County to find employment.

Moorehead said Belcher was present while the co-defendants actually committed the crime.

Judge Gary Johnson said Belcher’s version of the crime greatly varied from the two co-defendants’. Belcher also tested positive for three different controlled substances.

Johnson told Belcher he was with minors and should have known better than to commit the crime.

Belcher was given a one-to-three-year prison sentence.

In other cases:

- Garry Garvin, 28, of Birch River, was ordered to serve out the remainder of his original prison sentence.

Garvin was arrested last month on probation violations. According probation officer Roger Beverage, Garvin failed two drug screens and was also was accused of failing to make child support payments of $191 a month.

Garvin was serving five years’ probation after receiving a suspended one-to-three-year prison sentence. He had pleaded guilty to failure to pay child support.

- Steven Dorsey Jr., 25, was sentenced for his role in attempting to make methamphetamine.

Dorsey had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to manufacture meth by having pseudophedrine in his possession.

Dorsey was given a one-to-five-year prison sentence.

- Roger Lee Williams, 30, of Summersville, will spend at least the next three years in prison for three felony convictions.

Williams pleaded guilty to daytime burglary, obtaining goods by false pretenses and grand larceny.

Judge Johnson sentenced Williams to one to 10 years in prison. The sentences were ordered to run consecutively.
