Williamson Triathlon, Access Health 5k/10k at Glade

BECKLEY — There will be physical activity, music, food — and hopefully some fun in the sun today at The Resort at Glade Springs when folks from all over the United States compete in the Charlie Williamson Triathlon.

The event, in it’s sixth year, will begin at 9 a.m. with a 750-meter swim across Chatham Lake, followed by a 12-mile bike ride and will conclude with a 3.11-mile run.

However, if the training required to be able to compete in such an event may be a little too much, there will be a 5K/10K event as well.

“The 5k/10k is in it’s second year and we’re really trying to get the community involved,” AccessHealth’s Brittany Drake said. “Moms pushing strollers, everyone! Make it fun for the whole family!”

The 10K run will begin at noon, with the 5K run beginning at 12:05 p.m. and the 5K walk at 12:10 p.m.

“It’s really a fun family event,” Drake added. “Come out and get moving and enjoy the pretty summer weather. Sure, it’s competitive, but it’s about getting more active.”

According to a recent report from USNews, West Virginia ranks third in the country, with an obesity rate of 31.1 percent. It also has the highest percentage of adults with diabetes at 11.6 percent.

“In southern West Virginia, it’s always been one of the biggest barriers to get people eating right and getting active,” Drake said. “We recommend doing it as a family! It’s always best to do it with other people. Everybody needs physical activity. It’s key to a happy lifestyle.”

There is still time to sign-up.

“We strongly encourage same day registration,” she added. “Everyone is more than welcome to come to the town square directly across from the hotel by 11 a.m. to fill out the paperwork.”

The cost is $35 and includes a swag bag, food and entertainment at the post-race festivities from local band The Backtimers.

Drake encourages people in the community to get active and start training.

“There’s the popular Couch-to-5K program that is really good,” she said. “Or they can contact me at AccessHealth and I’ll be glad to help.”

She also encouraged any and everyone to come out and participate.

“Get out and get moving,” she added. “No matter if you do the run or the walk, anybody can do it. We’d love to get everyone out and get active. Come enjoy some physical activity.”

Finally, warmer weather has arrived to the Mountain State. I’m told, it’s socially acceptable to be late nowadays and there is even a term for it — being fashionably late. Of course, I have also been told that camo is the new black in fashion. I don’t care much for tardiness, or for fashion for that matter, but I am perfectly content with the weather forecaster’s report as of late. And if wearing camouflage is trendy, I will fit in just nicely at any social gathering.
